How Wolt uses your phone number
Wolt started in Finland and now runs food and grocery delivery in many countries. Like most delivery apps, it keeps a phone number on your account. It can be used to verify the account with a code, to send delivery updates, and to let the courier or the venue reach you about an order.
The verification SMS itself is brief: the app name and a short code you type in within a few minutes. Delivery messages are different. They arrive while your food is on the way, and they matter in real time.
Courier contact and delivery updates
This is the part people forget. A courier who cannot find your door, or a venue that has run out of an item, may call or text the number on your account. If that number is one you cannot read, you miss the message and the order can go wrong.
So split the job in two. A per-code number is meant for receiving the sign-up code, not for staying reachable afterwards. If you will actually order with the account, use a number you keep and can check during the delivery, such as a private rental.
Delivery messages can also include your address or order details. That is one more reason not to use a free shared number, whose inbox anyone can read.
Keeping your personal number private on Wolt
Your personal number ends up in more places than you expect: the app's records, the courier's screen, receipts and marketing lists. A separate number keeps all of that on one line you can stop using later.
It also gives you some control over promotional texts. If the delivery offers get too much, they land on the separate number, not the phone you use for family and work.
Wolt verification code not arriving
If the Wolt verification code does not arrive, check the number format and the country code first. Many apps expect the number without a leading zero after the country code. Then wait a few minutes before asking again, because repeated requests can trigger a pause.
The app may also turn down certain numbers, such as some VoIP ranges or numbers it has seen before. If one number never gets a code, a different type of number is the next step rather than more retries.
Which number to use for Wolt
Try VoIP High Quality first. It is a US +1 pool and the cheapest option at $0.50 per code, and if no code arrives, the order is refunded automatically. The /otp page shows the exact Wolt price and stock before you pay.
If Wolt does not accept it, or wants a number from the country you order in, try the United Kingdom pool, or rent a private non-VoIP number from the Numbers page. Check what the app asks for when you enter the number.
For an account you order with, a rental from $4.99 is the sensible choice. It runs from 1 day up to 12 months depending on the country, with unlimited SMS, so delivery texts and later login codes reach you.
A payment card on the account
Once you save a card on Wolt, the account is worth protecting. Whoever controls the phone number can often receive a login or reset code. Do not put a free shared number on an account with a card attached. Use a number you keep and only you can read.
If you rent a number by mistake, cancel between 5 and 120 minutes after renting, before any SMS arrives, and you are refunded.
