How to choose an SMS activation service

Every SMS activation service promises a working number. What separates them is what happens when the code does not come, who else can read your inbox, and whether you can get the same number back. Here is what to check before you top up anywhere, including with us.

Seven things to check

1. A refund when no code arrives

Many codes never arrive: the app refuses the number, or the SMS is slow. A good service returns your money on its own when that happens, without a support ticket. Check how long it waits and whether the refund is automatic.

2. A private inbox, not a shared one

Free public numbers show every message to anyone who opens the page, and most are already registered with the big apps. A paid number should be reserved for you while you wait for your code, with an inbox only you can read.

3. VoIP or a real SIM

VoIP numbers are cheap and work for most sign-ups. Strict apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, banks and Google often refuse them. A service should tell you which kind you are buying, and offer a real mobile (non-VoIP) number for the strict cases.

4. The price before you pay

Prices vary by app and by country. You should see the exact price for your app before you order, in a currency you know, with no subscription and no minimum spend hidden in the checkout.

5. A number you can keep

A one-off code number goes to someone else afterwards. If you will need to log in again by SMS, change phones or recover the account, you need the same number later: look for rentals that stay yours for weeks or months.

6. An API, if you automate

For testing or agents, check for a documented API: list services, order a number, read the code, cancel. Some services also offer an MCP server so AI assistants can do it directly.

7. A balance you will not lose

You prepay a wallet, so the service has to be there next month. Look at how long it has run, which ways you can pay, and whether support answers in a language you speak.

The kinds of service, side by side

Most services are one of three kinds. Within a kind, terms differ, so read each service's refund and pricing pages.

Where asms.ai fits

asms.ai has all three kinds in one account. Free public numbers need no sign-up. A private code order starts at $0.50, holds the number for you until the code arrives, and is refunded to your wallet automatically if no code arrives within 10 minutes. A rental starts at $4.99 and stays yours for the period you pay for, from a day up to a year depending on the country.

Strict apps refuse some code-order numbers, and an order that gets no code costs you nothing. For an account you want to keep, on apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram, a rental is the better buy: the number is yours alone, so you can receive the next login code too.

For automation there is a REST API and an MCP server for AI agents (API docs, agents). The service has run since 2018, first under the name AnonymSMS.

Questions

What is an SMS activation service?+

A service that gives you a phone number to receive a verification code (an OTP) by SMS, so you can sign up for an app without using your personal number. Some give out free shared numbers, some sell a private number for one code, and some rent you a number for a longer period.

Which kind of SMS activation service is best?+

It depends on the account. For a throwaway sign-up, a free public number or a single paid code is enough. For an account you want to keep, rent a number: apps ask for a new code when you change phones or log in from a new device, and only a number you still hold can receive it.

Why do apps refuse some activation numbers?+

Apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram check whether a number is VoIP and whether it has been registered before. Numbers on activation services are reused, so some are already linked to an account or flagged, and the app then sends no SMS. That is why a refund when no code arrives matters, and why a real-SIM rental works better for strict apps.

Are free SMS activation sites safe?+

For a low-stakes sign-up, yes. But their inboxes are public, so anyone can read the code, and whoever opens the page later could use the number to take over the account. Never use a shared number for anything linked to money, your main email or account recovery.

How much should an SMS activation number cost?+

On asms.ai a private code starts at $0.50 and a rental at $4.99; the exact price for each app and country is shown before you order. Across the market, prices vary by app, country and whether the number is VoIP or a real SIM, so compare the price for the app you need rather than a headline "from" price.
