How WhatsApp verification works with a US number
WhatsApp registers an account to a phone number. When you enter a +1 number, WhatsApp sends a six-digit code by SMS, or offers a call, and the account is active once you type it in. After that, the number is your WhatsApp identity: your contacts see it, and WhatsApp uses it to confirm it is you.
WhatsApp can ask for a code again later: when you move to a new phone, reinstall the app, or when it decides to check the account. It also offers two-step verification with a PIN, which is worth turning on.
That is the key thing to understand before choosing a number. A WhatsApp account is only as stable as your access to the number behind it.
Is there a free US number for WhatsApp?
Rarely one that works. Free shared numbers have public inboxes and are used by many people. On ASMS.ai they are mostly UK numbers, plus the Netherlands, Finland and a few others, and free US numbers are scarce. Any shared number that has been around for a while is very likely already registered on WhatsApp.
Even when a shared number does get a code, the account is not safe. Anyone can read the inbox, and the next person to register WhatsApp on that number takes the account from you.
So the honest answer to a US number for WhatsApp free of charge is that it seldom works, and when it does, it does not last.
Step one: a USA virtual number for WhatsApp, per code
On the /otp page, pick the United States and WhatsApp. You see the price and stock before paying, from $0.50. The number is private to you, and you read the code in your browser.
WhatsApp often refuses VoIP numbers, so this step may not work. That is why it comes first: it is the cheapest, and if no code arrives the order is refunded automatically, so a failed try costs nothing.
If the code does arrive, remember the number is yours only for that order. If WhatsApp asks for a code again later, you will not be able to read it. For an account you want to keep, go to step two.
Step two: a private non-VoIP US rental for an account you keep
A rental is a dedicated non-VoIP number from $4.99, for 1 day up to 12 months depending on the country. The inbox is private, SMS is unlimited, and the number is a carrier line rather than VoIP, so WhatsApp is more likely to accept it. It is still not certain, because WhatsApp makes its own decisions.
We strongly recommend this for any WhatsApp account you care about. When WhatsApp asks for a code on a new phone, you still have the number. Choose a long rental and renew it while you use the account.
If WhatsApp will not send to the rental, cancel between 5 and 120 minutes after renting, before any SMS arrives, for a refund.
US phone number for WhatsApp: tips that save money
Enter the number with +1 and no extra digits. Ask for the code by SMS rather than a call. Do not request codes many times in a row: WhatsApp adds a wait between attempts, and the wait gets longer.
Once you are in, turn on two-step verification with a PIN, and keep the rental for as long as you use the account. Our main WhatsApp guide, listed under Often searched, covers other countries and the wider set of options.
Use one number for one genuine account. WhatsApp's terms still apply. A private number is for privacy or a separate line, not for bulk messaging or fake accounts.
