Phone number vs address: two separate checks
Nextdoor is built around real neighbourhoods, so it wants to know that members actually live where they say. To confirm that, it offers several address verification methods, which can vary by country and change over time. Whatever method you use, it must be your real address. A virtual number cannot and should not be used to prove an address.
The phone number is a different matter. Nextdoor may text a code to confirm that the number on your account works, and may use it for sign-in. That number does not need to be your personal mobile. Any number you can read will receive the code.
If Nextdoor offers a phone-based method to confirm your address, it relies on your own records, so use your real number for that or pick another method Nextdoor offers. Use the separate number only for the account code.
Why keep your number off Nextdoor
Nextdoor is local by design. Your neighbours can see your name and area, and many people already feel that is enough to share with a street full of strangers. Adding your personal mobile to another app's database is one more place it can leak, be looked up or end up on a marketing list.
A separate number also helps if you use Nextdoor to sell items locally or hand out recommendations. Messages related to the app stay in one inbox, apart from your family and work.
What the Nextdoor verification code SMS looks like
Expect a short text with a numeric code and a reminder not to share it. Depending on the number's country, it may come from a short code or a named sender.
Codes expire quickly. If you ask for a new one, the old one usually stops working, so type the newest code. On ASMS.ai the message appears on the number's page when it is delivered, with no need to refresh the app.
Nextdoor not sending a verification code
The most common reason is that the number is already in use. Free shared numbers are used by many people, so Nextdoor may treat the number as taken. A fresh private number avoids that.
Check the country code next. Nextdoor runs in several countries, and the phone field should match your number: +1 for a US number, +44 for a UK one. Then wait a few minutes before pressing resend, because repeated requests can be slowed down.
If Nextdoor declines the number type, step up the ladder. VoIP High Quality from $0.50 is cheapest and refunded if no code comes. If you are on Nextdoor in the UK, use a real +44 mobile number. For the strictest checks, rent a private non-VoIP number.
Keep access to your Nextdoor account
If Nextdoor ever signs you in or recovers your account through an SMS code, whoever controls the number can get in. That is why a free shared number, with its public inbox, is a poor choice for an account you plan to keep.
A rental is the safer option. The number stays yours for up to 12 months depending on the country, the inbox is private, and later codes reach you. Before the rental ends, renew it or move the account to another number you control.
Step by step
Sign in to ASMS.ai and add wallet balance. On the OTP page, choose Nextdoor and the US pool, check the price and stock, and pay.
Enter the number in Nextdoor with the correct country code, then read the code in your ASMS.ai inbox and type it in. Complete address verification separately, with your real address, using one of the methods Nextdoor offers.
